12/28/05 11:20 pm - Pub Quiz: Team "Kishwaukee Konnection"

I joined some friends at a "Pub Quiz" last Tuesday night. It was interesting, but my first impression was "smokey and crowded". Apparently, due to the holiday conflicts, two different "pub quiz" groups met on the same night. Fortunately, sanity set in and windows were opened to clear the air.

We scored 45 out of a possible 76 points. Not too good, but I can take credit for a few correct -- as well as a few incorrect! I was CERTAIN that the common theme for the list "Union, Cebu, Samar, Mindoro, Penne" was NOODLES! (Really, they were names of islands in the Phillippines.)

Interesting evening, but I don't think that I'm better than a benchwarmer at trivia.

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.

11/17/05 11:35 pm - Eventually ... there's an update

I got around to updating my Bio so I don't feel like an informational slacker anymore :)

Reading some other person's bios led me to add some personal contact info as the earliest (backdated) posting. See the end of my bio or read this.

My daughter thinks that I'm too formal when writing. I think she needs better spelling, grammar and paragraph structure!

10/5/05 10:44 pm - Broadening my 'net horizons

Wow, you could spend your life just reading Livejournal & MySpace! As I browse friend to friend to interest group to friend, etc. I can really get a feel for how big the Internet has gotten as a social tool.

I have worked with computers for quite a few years -- and even gotten whole departments, family and friends on the Internet -- but, personally, have mostly just used the 'net for software, support and reference.

Friends and roommates have been actively involved in chatting, dating and such but I have not (until now!) really been attracted to the personal side of the 'net.

10/4/05 10:40 pm - Interests

The variety of "interests" available -- and the related groups --- is rather intimidating. It seems like you could spend waaay too much time browsing through journals!

10/4/05 12:00 am - In the beginning

This last weekend was the opening of the "Serenity" movie by Joss Whedon -- based on a short-lived FOX series in 2002 called "Firefly". Indirectly, the movie release is the reason this journal starts now.

I joined a Yahoo Group -- Nashville Browncoats -- in order to find other fans of the series/movie. I had been seeing movie posters/previews for the movie and researched it so that's how I found out about the "Firefly" series. After renting the full season, I found myself enjoying the show immensely and was looking forward to the official release.

After joining the group I was browsing through the member information and noticed that Livejournal was oft-noted reference for the members. I spent a lot of time over the weekend browsing various journals (on MySpace as well).

I am amazed at how much personal expression and experience is put into these journals. I tend to have a few close friends that I either talk on the phone with or spend time visiting personally. When I was younger I tried starting a diary several times. After having my brother find the first and, much later, two girlfriends who persuaded me to share it (resulting in some arguments!) I stopped trying as it seemed like too much of a privacy risk.

I know that I am a good listener, but not so good at expressing myself. I'm not really shy, just fairly quiet, and tend to do much better at clarifying other peoples feelings for them than for myself.

I guess we'll just see how this goes.
